Rachel Cristina Marichal has just graduated from Paramus High School, and lives in Paramus, New Jersey. She was deeply affected reading Anne’s diary and while volunteering hours at the local food pantry, Rachel saw the growing need for family food assistance 67 years after Anne’s family suffered similar food deprivations. Inspired to act, she became a driving force in the creation of the Paramus Helping Paramus Food Drive, largely organized and carried out by teenagers. She is creator of her town’s district-wide food awareness program, continues to devote much of her free time to raising awareness on the positive effects of volunteerism in communities and at her town’s food pantry, helping stock and distribute food to the less fortunate.
Rachel has been awarded the Presidential Volunteer Service Award and the Borough of Paramus Volunteer Service Award. Using Gandhi as a role model, Rachel plans to “be the change you want to see in the world”.
She loves theater and very actively participated in her school’s music and theater programs. Rachel will be interning this summer with 95.5 WPLJ and will attend Ramapo College of New Jersey in the fall. She would like to humbly thank The Anne Frank Center USA for awarding her with a 2012 Spirit of Anne Frank Outstanding Student Award.
