Joseph Alexander Langerman of Coronado, CA, is the winner of the 2011 Scholarship. Mr. Langerman, a recent graduate of Coronado High School, is the Founder of Voices Against Cruelty, Hatred, and Intolerance (VACHI), a movement designed to end hatemotivated behavior on high school campuses. Deeply concerned with the escalation of bullying in American high schools, Mr. Langerman created a school-wide survey distributed to fellow classmates to track the incidences and types of hate-motivated behaviors. Learning that others in school felt harassed and discriminated against, Mr. Langerman approached the school’s administration and advocated for formal policies to be put in place protecting students against hate-motivated behavior. Within two years, the school instituted a tolerance program. His efforts have reached a global audience, and his Facebook page has over 800 international fans. He will attend the University of Redlands, in California, and hopes to then attend law school, aiming to work in either civil rights litigation or disability rights law.
