It is not always easy to overcome political partisanship, but Anne Frank makes great things happen. On April 30, 2014, some of the biggest names in Washington – including Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) – came together to honor her legacy by planting an Anne Frank Memorial Tree on the West Front Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.

It was a tree Anne herself knew well, as the sapling planted in Washington was germinated from the same Chestnut tree that stood outside the Secret Annex. It was one of the only bits of nature the young girl could glimpse from the Annex. “From my favorite spot on the floor I look up at the blue sky and the bare chestnut tree, on whose branches little raindrops shine,” she wrote in February 1944, concluding “As long as this exists…I cannot be unhappy.”

“I am mindful of the millions of children who will visit the Capitol in the coming years and witness the growth of what I know will become a mighty and beautiful tree that is reflective of the might and beauty of its namesake,” said Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz at the event’s ceremony.
