The Art of Self-Discovery

Teaching students to reflect on their own role within our society, through journaling and the exploring of the artistic process, is central to our educational programming. The Art of Self-Discovery offers a variety of units that use art to teach literacy, history, and personal empowerment. Now in its fifth year in New York City Schools, this ten-week program includes professional development, a visit to the Anne Frank Center, copies of Anne’s diary, blank journals, a curriculum for each grade, eight direct service art classes with a teaching artist and a community celebration. In the past, art projects have included verbal and visual self-portraiture, clay busts, scrapbooks, comic drawing, and accordion book making.
