, from Greenbrier, AZ, is one of three winners of the Outstanding Student Award. Ms. Hannink drafted the charter of the Red Heel Coalition after talking with her principal about feelings of prejudice as a young woman in society. The Coalition’s motto “invest in a girl and she will do the rest” was originally met with hostility; undeterred, Ms. Hannink reorganized the coalition, tripling membership to include girls from all walks of life. Partnering with an international organization The Girl Effect, the Coalition’s work includes early screening for ovarian and breast cancer, and education and independence for girls in need. Anne Frank has been her guiding inspiration.
